Project Description:
My thesis project, "A Harmonious Working Environment," at the Glasgow School of Art, is a pioneering endeavour situated in Hamilton Hill, focusing on the historical reconstruction and maintenance of houseboats. This project aims to invigorate the local community, offering job opportunities and imparting valuable skills in traditional crafts.
This initiative is multi-dimensional, providing accommodation for those actively involved in learning and working, thereby fostering a community where education and living are interwoven. This approach not only instils a sense of purpose but also contributes to the rich history of the Glasgow Canal.
Architecturally, the building is a reflection of the surrounding canal environment. Its retaining walls, mirroring the canal’s construction, use locally sourced clay as a sealant against water, combined with a damp proof course and membrane for optimal damp resistance. Embracing sustainability, these walls are built from clay excavated during the basement’s construction, later transformed through 3D printing into bricks and fired, demonstrating a commitment to zero-waste construction methods.
Incorporating cutting-edge technology, bio-algae solar cells are utilised for both lighting and air purification. These cells, nourished by canal water, facilitate algae growth, contributing to clean air production and electricity generation, showcasing the project's dedication to environmental sustainability.
The facility serves multiple functions: it houses a workshop and a museum, both accessible to the public. These spaces offer educational opportunities about the local ecology, the history of the canal, and the importance of boats in historical trade.
A key addition to this project is the inclusion of office rental spaces, designed for remote workers and companies. Situated above the primary functional areas, these spaces offer a modern, serene working environment, catering to the growing demand for flexible workspaces. This not only diversifies the facility’s use but also generates a steady income stream, supporting the project's financial sustainability.
"A Harmonious Working Environment" transcends mere reconstruction; it is a nexus for community development, environmental innovation, and historical conservation. It stands as a model for integrating sustainable practices into urban redevelopment, while nurturing community involvement and providing versatile working spaces.
