Beacon of Hope: Notre Dame Redesign

Paris, France

2019

Project Description:

In an ambitious endeavour, I participated in the redesign competition for Notre Dame following the devastating fire. My approach aimed to preserve the cathedral's historical and architectural legacy while infusing it with a symbol of hope and renewal.

The vision for Notre Dame was to maintain its timeless grandeur and essence, honouring its iconic form and structure. However, I envisioned a subtle yet powerful addition—a symbolic beacon of light. This beacon would shine brilliantly, serving as a poignant reminder of the fire's tragic impact and the resilience of the human spirit.

The beacon, modern in its technology, would seamlessly integrate with the cathedral’s architecture. Strategically placed, it would cast a radiant glow visible from afar, both day and night. This luminous addition would not overshadow Notre Dame but rather enhance its presence, symbolising the enduring spirit of a city and its beloved monument.

The design aimed to pay homage to Notre Dame's storied history while acknowledging the need for healing and renewal. The beacon of light was a metaphorical torch, illuminating the path towards recovery and restoration. It stood as a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, beauty and resilience could prevail.

While my entry into the Notre Dame redesign competition was symbolic, it represented a belief in the power of architecture to heal and inspire. It was a tribute to the cathedral's enduring legacy and a vision of a future where the past and present coexist harmoniously, guided by the eternal light of hope.
