Empowering Micro Dwelling
UK
2017
Project Description:
In my second year at university, I embarked on a profoundly meaningful project—a Micro Dwelling designed specifically to empower individuals with visual impairments. This endeavour was born from a dual purpose: to provide tactile guidance within a living space and to contribute to addressing the pressing housing crisis in the UK.
The heart of this innovative project lies in its dedication to creating an inclusive and tactile living environment. Every aspect of the design revolves around empowering individuals with visual impairments to navigate their homes with confidence and ease. The tactile guidance system within the dwelling is a testament to this commitment.
Texture, carefully integrated into the architectural elements, becomes a reliable guide, allowing residents to 'feel' their way around the building. Walls, floors, and surfaces feature distinct textures, facilitating spatial orientation and enhancing the overall sense of safety.
Beyond its tactile features, the Micro Dwelling addresses the larger societal challenge—the housing crisis. By offering a compact yet functional living solution, the project contributes to the much-needed diversification of housing options. These micro dwellings can be efficiently and affordably constructed, providing a sustainable response to the pressing housing shortage.
The interior layout of the Micro Dwelling maximises utility within a compact footprint. It is a testament to the efficiency of design, offering all essential amenities within a small space without sacrificing comfort. It's a solution that not only addresses the housing crisis but also respects the unique needs of individuals with visual impairments.
The Micro Dwelling project goes beyond architecture; it is a statement of inclusivity, innovation, and social responsibility. It aims to empower those with visual impairments to lead independent lives while contributing to the larger societal goal of providing accessible and affordable housing for all.
