Revitalising Partick Market: A Modern Marketplace Revival
Glasgow, UK
2017
Project Description:
As a finalist in the Interact competition, hosted by a collaborative effort across universities, my project centred on the revival of the historic Partick Market in Glasgow. My vision aimed to recreate this cherished space, transforming it into an open, vibrant market area, all while embracing an architectural design that seamlessly merges form and function.
At the heart of my design is the captivating glulam (glue-laminated) timber structure, which serves as the focal point of the market. This striking architectural feature supports a gracefully arched glass roof. This roof is not just a design element; it's a functional masterpiece, ingeniously directing rainwater towards a pool at the market's end, symbolising the union of nature and urban life.
Underneath the market's surface, a strategically designed underground storage area caters to the needs of businesses. This space provides a secure and convenient location for vendors to store their goods, ensuring efficient operations. Furthermore, the market design accommodates vehicular access, facilitating smooth deliveries and ensuring a well-stocked and thriving marketplace.
A hallmark of the market is the glass roof that stretches over the circulation area. This roof, crafted from tinted and frosted glass, not only adds to the market's aesthetic charm but also serves a practical purpose. It welcomes natural light into the space, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This design choice significantly enhances the visitor experience, making the market a delightful place to explore and shop.
During the winter months, the market undergoes a mesmerising transformation. Integrated lighting systems within the structure illuminate the market, turning it into a radiant spectacle. This feature transforms the market into a local landmark, attracting visitors and infusing the area with a captivating glow during the darker days of the year.
In essence, my "Partick Market Project," as a finalist in the prestigious Interact competition, embodies the spirit of innovation and community engagement. It is not just about resurrecting a piece of Glasgow's history but also about reimagining it in a contemporary context. This project celebrates the convergence of heritage and modernity, fostering social interaction, and driving economic prosperity.
